Dr. Milgram prescribed the banjo splint to relieve the pain and swelling of Atwood’s hand from using the flail. Having no one to thresh the corn, Atwood’s wife left him to return to her family in Minnesota. Six weeks later, Atwood, relieved of the splint, resumed his farm chores. He was struck by lightning on July 25, 1926 but survived.
